Middle school was roughly the first time I truly became aware of social justice in the world. It was probably the first real time I realized that the world wasn’t fair and that equal opportunities were not available for everybody. Around the time of Barraack Obama’s first term our country went into a recession and unemployment was high. I watched my friend’s mom become unemployed because the company could not afford to have her as an employee anymore. My family was not affected hard at the beginning of the recession, but I eventually watched both my mom and my dad lose their jobs only months apart from each other. That was a hard time financially for our family. Many people were affected by the recession, but some families felt little weight of its effects on our economy. In America, we have so many freedoms that are upheld by social justice. The social justice right that is most important to me is my access to education. I was educated for 13 years through the p ublic school. Through United States Federal Government loans I am able to attend college. After college I will have to pay back the loans, but in the meantime the government gave me a way to attend college, get an education, and make my dream of a teacher come true. Social justice is a part of my life whether I think about it every day or not. It has an impact on my life and the people around me. My goal as a teacher is to give my students the tools they need to be contributing citizens of society.
